The internet is a wondrous place but it can also be dangerous. Sure, you can order things you need, watch a movie, communicate with family, and so much more, but the seemingly boundless activities you can perform online also makes it quite a keen target for cyber criminals. As such, there are so many different kinds of online threats you could face and you can be safe if you get connected with company like Hikvision. Some will be no more than a nuisance, really, while others might be far more damaging.
Take the DDoS, for example. This is one of the most aggressive online attacks you can encounter online, but fortunately, it is designed to only hit very specific targets.
What is DDoS?
DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. As you could be able to ascertain from the name, this type of attack attempts to block service to a particular site or network. More specifically, the “distributed” aspect of this attack aims to overwhelm a server with traffic coming from multiple sources which prevents legitimate visitors from accessing the site.
Distributed Denial of Service attacks begin with building a network of infected computers, often more than one network. The infected computers in these networks are called a “botnet” and they act kind of like zombie computers who continue to spread the malicious software through lots of distribution methods. This can include sending infected emails and social media messages. Once the computers in the network have been infected, the attackers can control as many of the machines as they want, remotely.
A DDoS “army” can assemble in very little time at all, depending on the distribution method, of course. Once assembled, though, the botnet will send a massive amount of traffic to the intended target. This, floods the bandwidth, which makes it harder for anyone to connect to it. Some attacks can actually be so large that they can max the bandwidth capacity of an entire country. Obviously, this can be problematic.
